  • Brenda Gormley (70), a leader who helped establish Denton County’s Community Emergency Response Team and served as its head CERT coordinator, died Thursday. Her work earned national respect and left a lasting mark on emergency services in the area.  Denton Record-Chronicle
  • Heart of the City will name former TV journalist Nicole Felder — chosen for her 20 years of experience — as its new CEO on Monday, Jan. 13; Danny Myall is promoted to COO to guide nonprofit operations. The move aims to strengthen the organization's community impact.  Cross Timbers Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Comerica Bank will lay off 184 employees at its Frisco location on March 13 after a nearly 11-billion-dollar merger was approved. The bank said its CoWorkSpaces will keep serving small businesses in Denton while offering support to affected workers.  KERA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2026 Denton Black Film Festival runs Jan. 28-Feb. 1 in Denton and shows films about Quakertown, Christian rapper LeCrae, and Stax Records with a Hope and Courage theme. The festival will have talks with filmmakers, free screenings, and go virtual from Feb. 1 (8 p.m.) through Feb. 8.  KERA

  • The western diamondback rattlesnake was found in a home garage in Argyle on Nov. 6, marking its new presence in Denton County.  Denton Record-Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Denton residents experiencing sneezing and itchy eyes may be facing cedar fever season as Ashe juniper pollen from Central Texas intensifies allergy symptoms. Health experts say verifying if symptoms are allergies or another illness and trying over the counter treatments, including antihistamines & nasal sprays, could help manage discomfort.  KERA
  • Local police noted that injuries from e-bikes and scooters jumped 21% from 2021 to 2022 and are urging Denton riders to use helmets and follow traffic rules. Officials stress that staying safe and checking device maintenance can prevent further serious injuries.  Cross Timbers Gazette
