ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Police said the body of a 29-year-old kayaker wearing a life jacket was found in Lake Lewisville Saturday night and taken to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office—his identity and cause of death remain unreleased. NBC 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of North Texas launched a new STEM Startups course that helps graduate students turn research into business ventures — the course enrolls students from Engineering, Science, Information, and Business and guides them in forming teams to develop market-ready projects such as an app for shrimp farms, a blockchain insurance system, and a movement tracker to prevent injuries — led by Professor Neal Smatresk to connect discoveries with real-world innovation. - ➤ A Friday staff report to City Council showed that city leaders attended an NLC Congressional Conference in Washington to discuss federal funding and infrastructure challenges while Denton earned a Transparency Trailblazer award and DME was recognized as a Tree Line USA Utility. The report also highlighted Tilly, a lively one-year-old shelter dog looking for an active home and provided updates on public art funding, road repairs, traffic safety improvements and a Tree Rebate Program offering up to $250 in rebates for planting native trees. - ➤ The University of North Texas was included in a federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for allegedly excluding students from its graduate programs based on race (U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said the probe is meant to protect students from illegal discrimination). It is one of 45 institutions under review as part of broader civil rights enforcement efforts. KERA
