COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Denton’s Friends of the Library will hold Library Giving Day on April 1 to raise $1,000 for improvements at the Denton Public Library—organizers hope the fundraiser will encourage community support for new services.  Denton Record-Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 21, a crash in Prosper killed school nurse Raquel Torres Sawyer when a pickup truck driven by alleged repeat drunk driver Austin Hunter Bruckner ran a red light at U.S. 380 and Lovers Lane; Bruckner (age 25) is in jail on charges of intoxication manslaughter and unlawful carrying of a weapon (he had a previous DWI arrest) as the investigation continues.  NBC 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Thursday that he launched an investigation into Superior HealthPlan for allegedly using private investigators to spy on lawmakers, journalists and citizens—actions that lawmakers say may have helped the company secure state contracts and avoid paying valid claims. CEO Mark Sanders was fired on Wednesday after being questioned at a House committee hearing, and further inquiry into the company’s practices is ongoing.  NBC 5
  • Denton earned all six Transparency Stars—one of 11 Texas cities recognized—after the Texas Comptroller’s Office awarded the honor on March 18. Chief Financial Officer Jessica Williams said the city built a central online platform for key financial data that is now updated every year as new reports are set to be released soon.  North Texas Daily
