Good morning, Denton. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The university parking office announced plans to update campus parking with improvements that will start this summer and continue in the fall, including fixed cameras for license plate recognition, monthly permit payments, and an app to show lot occupancy. The Highland Street garage will be the first to get new cameras — six vans with plate-scanning cameras will patrol other lots — a move expected to reduce paperwork and speed up permit activation.  North Texas Daily
  • On Thursday, a Texas House committee passed a new school finance bill that raises classroom funds and supports teacher pay while also moving a bill to let parents use state money for private school tuition—both measures now head to the full House for further review. Gov. Greg Abbott said the move brings Texas closer to offering a major school choice program.  KERA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Denton Fire Department will introduce Texas’ first electric fire truck with a push-in ceremony at 4 p.m. on April 11 at Fire Station 1, 332 East Hickory St. Community members can help push the truck into service — a nod to the site's history as the former Hickory Street Diesel Plant known as the 'Powerhouse.'  City of Denton
  • An annual Medal of Honor motorcade will pass through Denton along I-35 and State Highway 114 on April 9, blocking several roadways for an estimated route that is about eight to nine miles long. More than 550 vehicles from law enforcement, public safety agencies and volunteer groups will escort recipients from DFW Airport to Gainesville—officials advise motorists to expect delays along the route.  KERA
  • Denton City Council approved a rezoning request on March 25 to allow development of a Family Justice Center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault on six and a half acres near North Bonnie Brae Street south of Riney Road. The nonprofit received a land donation from the J. Newton Rayzor Foundation and a $400,000 city gift—for pre-development work—and will choose contractors to break ground later this year.  North Texas Daily
