COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Texas organizations removed the financial barrier to prom by hosting free dress and accessory events at Boys & Girls Clubs, Dallas CASA and other locations through Comerica Bank partnerships. Extra dresses were donated to Viola’s House so more teens can pre-register for an appointment—helping students access prom attire at no cost.  CBS Texas

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Lewisville ISD elementary teacher John Leslie Collett pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a student and was sentenced to 20 years in prison last month—he was arrested in April 2023 after a parent reported that her 10-year-old daughter said he abused her on several occasions—he must now register as a sex offender.  The Dallas Morning News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educator Mark Terry said the pending school choice bill would give schools more funding and control because a $10,000 voucher falls short of covering high tuition costs. He recommended that parents tour public schools to learn about their open board meetings—helping them understand how public education remains a strong option.  CBS Texas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Families of victims testified at the state capitol and urged lawmakers to require safety measures at senior living communities after the serial killer Billy Chemirmir murdered several residents. Lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 1283— which would mandate background checks for facility employees— while advocates push for improved protections for seniors.  NBC 5
  • Rail advocates in Texas remain optimistic as Senate Bill 1555 passed last month may give TXDoT $350 million to improve rail crossings—this bill and others to support high-speed rail from Dallas to Houston and a new line with a private partner are in the legislature. Advocates noted that fewer bills now threaten rail projects compared to past sessions—improving chances for future developments.  KERA

  • Today, Luka Doncic returns to Dallas at the American Airlines Center to face his former team, the Mavericks, nearly two months after a surprising trade sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
