COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cloud 9 Charities founder Kim Cloud announced that Bedtime Rescue—a program providing emergency shelter for local families for 26 years—will now be managed by Giving Grace, with Dawn Shapely, Michelle Conner and Samantha Sims taking over operations to support families in need. Cloud said the transition marks a new chapter that will help the program expand its reach and services.  Cross Timbers Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • TWU Theatre has performed part of its season finale, Spring Awakening, at Redbud Theater from April 11-13 and will resume performances from April 17-19. The rock musical uses modern songs to explore youth challenges — blending past and present — while ticket prices are $5 for students and seniors and $10 for general admission.  Voice of Denton

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Woman’s University’s occupational therapy program ranked No. 1 in Texas and tied for 24th nationally—its physical therapy program ranked second in the state and tied for 28th nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report’s evaluation. The university also had its healthcare administration and speech-language pathology programs recognized, showing its strong role in training health professionals in Denton.  Voice of Denton

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today Denton wins the Texas Environmental Excellence Award for Innovative Waste Management as its Commercial Organics Diversion pilot program (a joint effort by the Solid Waste and Recycling and Wastewater Departments) collects leftover food from downtown restaurants to make compost while aiming to divert 30% of waste from the landfill by 2030.  City of Denton

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denton City Council received the Friday Staff Report on April 11, which outlined a new capital projects scorecard, a special election for charter amendments on May 3, park upgrades at North Lakes Dog Park starting April 21, a Girl Scout wildflower garden at Avondale Park, and a pet adoption spotlight for Samantha, a three-legged German Shepherd available for adoption. Council will review a resident’s feedback on a proposed land donation and rezoning tied to the Denton 195 project on May 6 — a decision that may affect future community plans — as detailed in the report.  Voice of Denton
