- ➤ At UNT, students and faculty gathered to distribute free tomato and pepper seedlings as part of the Milpa Agricultural Placemaking Project + a four-year USDA-funded initiative that aims to blend traditional farming with campus life and community outreach. The project will expand with a public seed library, partnerships with local gardens, and curriculum enhancements in food studies + plans to create an edible campus landscape. Voice of Denton
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday evening in the 100 block of Daisey Lane, a suspect fled a traffic stop and drove into a driveway before running into a backyard with a handgun—after refusing commands to drop it, a Justin Police officer shot the suspect who later died at Medical City Denton, and officials said the suspect acted alone while the officer is on leave as Texas Rangers begin an investigation. - ➤ Texas Woman’s University will host its 2025 Senior Fashion Showcase at Blagg-Huey Library on May 2 where seniors will display new designs and a pop-up retail market—retail opens at 5:00 p.m. and the runway begins at 6:30 p.m. The event, themed Chateau Bordeaux, brings together skills from fashion design and merchandising classes to offer local audiences a glimpse of real-world fashion careers. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, April 23, UNT ELEVAR graduates its first cohort at the UNT spring commencement in Denton—an initiative that began in Fall 2021 to offer custom courses, internships, and life skills training to students with intellectual disabilities. Students including Alex Bartolo, John Martin, and Noah Rahn have built a path to independence under the guidance of associate professor Brenda Barrio. Voice of Denton
- ➤ TWU kinesiology seniors from Team Pleiades won second place at the NASA Texas Space Grant Consortium Design Challenge on April 18 & earned scholarships after showcasing a wearable exercise device designed to help astronauts counter muscle loss in space. Voice of Denton

- ➤ The City of Denton launched its new 311 Contact Center on April 21 to make non-emergency city services easier to access—staffed 24 hours with trained representatives and featuring a Denton 311 app that replaced the old Engage Denton app on April 28. Residents can call 3-1-1, use the app, or visit the website for prompt service. Voice of Denton
- ➤ North Texans will vote on May 3 for local leaders and issues including three proposals on the Denton City Council ballot. Today is the last day for early voting—polls on election day will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CBS Texas
- ➤ The City Council staff report from April 25th outlined a new workgroup to improve homelessness services—updates also included a monthly financial report, Building Safety Month events like a children’s coloring contest and fair, and a pet spotlight for Chip in need of adoption.
