- ➤ Denton Parks and Recreation began a multi-phased project on May 12 at North Lakes Dog Park to replace worn granite with a ten-foot concrete trail—installing ADA ramps and improving rainwater drainage. The park remains open except for one dog pen, which will close temporarily as work continues and is set to finish in late June. North Texas Daily
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ ERCOT expects record power demand today as rising temperatures near 100 degrees push the grid to a peak of 84,000 megawatts, compared to last year's May usage of 77,000 megawatts. Texas legislators are reviewing bills to upgrade the grid — potential costs may be passed on to consumers. CBS Texas
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new study published in Nature Cities shows that Dallas and Fort Worth are sinking at an average rate of over 4 millimeters per year — a result of groundwater extraction and building weight — which increases risks of flooding and infrastructure damage. Researchers measured subsidence using satellite radar data on 28 populous U.S. cities. NBC 5

- ➤ Half Price Books, based in Dallas, is fighting a proposed bill in Austin that would let people sue bookstores for displaying material judged harmful to minors. President Kathy Doyle Thomas warned the law would force extensive book reviews while the bill remains in committee during the session ending June 2. NBC 5
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Spring heat drove snakes out of hibernation, and wildlife experts said snake bite calls increased as Dallas Fort Worth Wildlife Control got 3 to 4 calls a day and Cook Children's Medical Center treated incidents, including a case in Colleyville last week. Residents should wear thick boots and clear brush—steps that lower the risk of bites during yard work. CBS Texas
