- ➤ On May 19, Denton singer Breanna Nix finished third on season 23 of American Idol after receiving the fewest viewer votes. After her elimination, she was celebrated at a local parade with a free concert, a special ice cream flavor launch, and a key to the city from Mayor Gerard Hudspeth. KERA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UNT hosted its annual Physics Olympics on May 15th for high school teams to tackle science challenges including an egg drop, a catapult contest, lab demos and a scavenger hunt at UNT’s campus. The event, organized by Professor Sandra Quintanilla with faculty and staff (including Society of Physics Students), ended with the 11th-grade team from W. E. Boswell High School earning a $1,000 scholarship for each member. Voice of Denton
- ➤ Texas Woman’s University will host the National Education for Women’s Leadership Program from June 8th to 12th in Denton, training 25 undergraduates in civic skills + public service leadership. The program offers workshops on media literacy, advocacy techniques and includes a visit to the Texas State Capitol + hands-on exercises to build leadership. Voice of Denton

- ➤ Denton city staff gave weekly Council updates with a bike ride featuring Mayor Hudspeth on May 31 at 8:30 a.m. and public input on the draft 2025 Action Plan open until June 20 — they also released the quarterly financial report, launched a new dashboard for tracking Southeast Denton projects, addressed downtown parking and ADA sidewalk repairs at South Lakes Park, noted delays on Robinwood Lane, and spotlighted Coco the Husky for adoption — providing a full picture of ongoing city projects. - ➤ Texas lawmakers plan to ban minors from signing up for social media under House Bill 186 (filed by Rep. Jared Patterson), which also requires age verification for app downloads and sets a company deadline by April. A Senate panel supports the bill that lets parents request deletion of a minor’s account (companies must comply within 10 days) as Texas moves to protect children online. KERA
- ➤ Union Circle renovation at UNT began on May 14th, leading to road closures and parking restrictions. City of Denton officials and utility crews worked on upgrading the roadway and parking areas with new parking rates and bus routes—completion is expected by the end of the fall semester.
