  • A local VFW post and UNT are building a gaming center to help older and younger veterans connect—an effort to expand community resources for military service members. The center will use video games as a bridge between generations.  Denton Record-Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Denton smoke shops are challenging Senate Bill 3, which passed both legislative chambers and is waiting for Gov. Abbott's signature because it would ban THC and hemp products starting in September. Business owners have led a petition that has gathered over 123,500 signatures—warned that the law would hurt a booming industry and limit access to alternative medicine.  North Texas Daily

  • On May 28, the Denton County Homeless Coalition gave its annual State of Homelessness Address at the Denton County Administrative Courthouse, showing that homelessness had increased from 518 to 690 individuals and outlining local programs like diversion and rapid rehousing—steps aimed at reducing the rise in homelessness.  North Texas Daily
  • The City of Denton Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall’s Council Chambers to review a request for a Specific Use Permit for multifamily residential use on about 4.115 acres along the east side of Fallmeadow Street near Gardenview Circle – the commission’s recommendation will be sent to City Council for final action.  Voice of Denton
  • The Denton Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers—215 E McKinney St to discuss Kalyans, Inc.'s request to change a 1.09 acre site from Residential 2 to Mixed-Use Neighborhood, with recommendations sent to City Council for final action.  Voice of Denton
  • About 150 people gathered outside Denton City Hall on June 3 to protest Mayor Gerard Hudspeth’s decision to deny a request to proclaim June as Pride month, arguing that the one-sentence reply lacked transparency (the organizers then read their own proclamation). Council members Beck and Meltzer showed support at the rally while Hudspeth and others were absent from the protest.  North Texas Daily
