  • Residents in Denton will get free legal help and job support at the Expunction Clinic and Court in the Community event on June 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 2030 W. University Dr.—organized by Goodwill North Central Texas and the Denton Municipal Court, the event will help qualifying individuals clear records and resolve outstanding warrants.  Voice of Denton
  • Mailman Ian Burke, who has known Floyd for three years on his Denton route, adopted the service dog after its veteran owner died and a call over Memorial Day weekend led him to the shelter + he now cares for Floyd as a cherished companion.  CBS Texas

  • A Denton County husband and father of three was killed by lightning while playing golf in Gunter on Sunday at about 5:15 p.m.—his father was also hit and is in hospital as family remember his strong faith and kind heart.  NBC 5

  • Texas Woman’s University in Denton has named Dr. Jace Hargis its first chief AI strategist with his role beginning on July 1 — a move designed to boost AI integration in teaching, administration and research — and his appointment will drive partnerships within the university and with outside experts.  Voice of Denton
  • Three TAMS students from UNT—Anirudh Mazumder, Elliott Slaughter, and Saikiran Motati—were honored as Goldwater Scholars for 2025 for their work in AI, chemical engineering and pharmaceutical research.  Voice of Denton

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After weeks of heavy rain, residents across North Texas have reported sightings of the toxic hammerhead worm that has a hammer-shaped head and produces a skin-irritating neurotoxin. Experts advise freezing or using salt and vinegar to kill the worm — since splitting it creates more worms — and urge locals to report sightings to the Texas Invasive Species Institute.  NBC 5

  • The White House is targeting FEMA—operating from Denton to serve five states—for questions about its role after Denton County received over $306 million in aid following deadly tornadoes and straight-line winds in 2024.  Denton Record-Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • UT Dallas researchers are testing a tiny implantable device that stimulates the vagus nerve during physical therapy to help spinal injury patients gain movement. Marshall Bell, who was struck by a vehicle in 2016, said he can now perform simple tasks as clinical trials continue and researchers aim for full FDA approval in three to four years.  CBS Texas

  • North Texas is preparing to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has announced plans for nine matches at AT&T Stadium plus a proposed name change to better show Arlington. The region will also host six training camp sites plus a 39-day fan festival to welcome fans, media, and boost the local economy.  CBS Texas
