COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new guide lists 11 Fourth of July events in North Texas, including parades, festivals and fireworks, with details subject to change due to weather conditions. Denton residents can enjoy a family-friendly Denton Jubilee Festival and Drone Show on July 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Quakertown Park — check local updates for any schedule changes.  KERA
  • Data from United Way of Denton County’s point-in-time count shows a 33% rise in the number of people without housing compared to 2024. The count reported 408 individuals sheltered, including 103 children, and noted that about 27% of those without housing are Black (despite Black residents making up only 11% of the county) as local organizations plan to expand supportive services and housing options.  KERA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dallas-Fort Worth law enforcement agencies announced active shooter training sessions—designed to help residents respond quickly—in 31 North Texas locations including the Denton Public Safety Training Center on Saturday, June 28. The CRASE program teaches civilians to avoid, deny, and defend—sessions run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are open to all ages.  The Dallas Morning News
  • Gov. Abbott signed Senate Bill 835 over the weekend, which will ban nondisclosure agreements in cases of sexual abuse and human trafficking and free victims from such agreements unless a defendant gets a court order, with the law set to take effect Sept. 1—helping survivors speak up.  KERA

  • Denton County Public Health reported three mosquito traps testing positive for West Nile Virus in Lantana and the Harvest area, and county officials will begin truck-based ultra-low volume fogging today between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.—if weather conditions allow, the process will continue three times through Monday.  Cross Timbers Gazette
