COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke Fire Captain Michael Reedy died on Wednesday after a sudden medical emergency; he served the community since 2007—beginning as a volunteer before becoming a full-time leader at Station 1—and his memory is honored with lowered flags, a memorial at the station, and grief counseling for his team.  Cross Timbers Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, system regents appointed Dr. Kirk Calhoun as the lone finalist for president of the UNT Health Science Center at a special called meeting, and he has served as interim president since February. He previously led the opening of a medical school at UT Tyler.  KERA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Water Development Board declared a conflict between two water plans over the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir in northeast Texas after hearing testimony from Region C and Region D. Mediation on the dispute—set to begin by July 14—will address differing views on water supply needs and local impacts on farmland and communities.  KERA
  • Denton received a state award on June 10 for its food waste diversion pilot—using existing infrastructure to reduce landfill waste—and City Council discussed downtown rezoning scheduled for review on July 23 as well as property tax relief signed on June 16. Council also approved updates to the Mobility Plan while reviewing proposals for street lighting improvements and noting a delay in reopening City Jail due to necessary repairs.  Voice of Denton
