CRIME NEWS

  • Filemon Perez, a former Lewisville officer, was indicted on a third-degree felony stalking charge after a woman said he repeatedly appeared at her home on duty last year—he now faces separate allegations of sexual assault, and he is scheduled for an announcement hearing on Sept. 18.  The Dallas Morning News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas school choice will let parents pick charter, private or home school options next year—up to $10,000 per child is available from a $1 billion fund. Parents such as Tahj Sandlin and Trae Adkins are attending meetings now to get ready for the new system starting in 2026.  CBS Texas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After educating Denton for 27 years, the Denton Fire Department’s Clowns on Fire program might be paused next fiscal year due to proposed budget cuts that will reduce $500,000 in overtime pay—city officials will meet on Aug. 9 and Aug. 19 to address a nearly $14.5 million deficit while keeping current firefighter positions intact.  North Texas Daily
  • Denton City Council approved $254 million in certificates of obligation bonds on Tuesday to fund projects such as court renovations, police and fire vehicle upgrades and water and road improvements in response to the city's growth—funding is expected in late August.  KERA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Denton confirmed that a mosquito trapped last week on Roselawn Drive and Bernard Street in Denia Park tested positive for West Nile virus, which moved the risk level from 2 to 3—mandating more surveys on local mosquitoes. The city advised residents to remove standing water and wear long clothing during peak mosquito hours.  City of Denton
  • Denton County Public Health reported a positive West Nile virus mosquito trap in unincorporated Denton County near Aubrey on Wednesday—officials scheduled extra ground fogging southwest of Aubrey to reduce the risk of exposure.  Denton Record-Chronicle

  • North Texas is cutting athletic department staff after its House v. NCAA settlement to free up funds for paying players directly. Athletic director Jared Mosley said the changes include layoffs and leaving some positions unfilled—moves also seen at other schools.  KERA
