Good morning, Denton. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music artist Chancey Williams will perform neo-traditional country songs at the North Texas Fair and Rodeo on August 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Denton — fans can buy tickets ranging from $28 to $58 and expect to hear selections from his latest album, One of These Days.  Voice of Denton
  • The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival will be scaled back this October if proposed city budget cuts are approved, forcing organizers to pay a full rental fee for Quakertown Park and trim the event’s setup. Festival leaders have four months to adjust plans, which could mean using a smaller park area and reducing the number of stages—factors that may change the traditional format of the event.  KERA

ECONOMY NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of North Texas will launch a new game studies and design degree at the Department of Media Arts this fall to offer students hands-on experience and industry-focused training. The curriculum covers digital content, animation, coding and narrative storytelling with concentrations in narrative design+ programming and game studies or art and design beginning later.  Voice of Denton
  • John Sullivan works at the UNT Greenhouse Facilities where he starts before sunrise to fix water systems and wiring so that plant research in agriculture, biology, and chemistry continues—supporting experiments on drought tolerance and cell studies. A sixth-generation Texan, he said his work also includes autoclaving research plants once their experiments finish—ensuring safety in the facility.  Voice of Denton

HEALTH NEWS

  • UNT researchers at Discovery Park have developed lab-grown heart organoids with blood vessels—small artificial hearts that can test treatments and lower animal testing. The team led by Adam Yang and Ph.D. student Angello H. Gomez will refine the organoids with support from federal grants for safer drug research.  Voice of Denton
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled roughly 5 million above ground pools sold by major vendors because a compression strap can let children access the water and drown. Nine children died between 2002 and 2007 — they were aged from 22 months to 3 years — in states including Texas.  CBS Texas
  • A mosquito trapped near Roselawn Drive and Bernard Street in Denia Park tested positive for West Nile Virus from samples collected last week — causing Denton to raise its public health risk from 2 to 3.
