  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County will soon open their first Denton County branch in the old Lewisville fire station (after years of mobile programs) (to provide a permanent space for youth activities).  Denton Record-Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT is teaming up with law enforcement to run Operation Slowdown as officers focus on speeding drivers across the state. From July 18 to Aug. 3, extra patrols and tickets will aim to cut deadly crashes—because speeding is the top cause of traffic fatalities.  NBC 5
  • Starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday, the northbound I-35E direct connector to southbound I-35W in Denton will be closed for bridge construction until 5 a.m. Wednesday — the closure will repeat nightly until July 29 with a signed detour in place and drivers urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.  Cross Timbers Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heavy rainfall, high heat, and humidity in July created ideal mosquito breeding conditions across North Texas, and experts warn that the infestation could continue until mid-December. Health officials have already launched spray operations in nearby hotspots—no West Nile virus cases have been reported in Denton yet.  NBC 5
