CRIME NEWS

  • Lewisville police fatally shot a woman after a traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase across several cities that ended in a parking lot off I-35E—she fled when officers confirmed a felony warrant, crashed a patrol vehicle, and did not drop her gun when ordered, and no officer was hurt.  CBS Texas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Earlier this month, a Denton artist showcased wearable art at a local fashion show to mark Disability Pride Month. The display featured creative pieces like fabric guts and a velvet uterus — highlighting both visible and invisible disabilities and chronic illnesses.  Denton Record-Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This fall, a new Texas law will ban cell phones in public schools to reduce classroom distractions—supporters say the ban may help learning. Some parents worry it will limit student safety, while experts say frequent phone alerts can disrupt development.  CBS Texas
  • UNT sophomore Benjamin Wilcox built a website in his backyard over three weeks in May so students can see when classes were offered and plan their degree schedules. The site collects data from the UNT Faculty Information System and went live in late June, giving students a new tool for planning their courses.  KERA

  • The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13 at City Hall to consider a request from Lee Allison of Allison Engineering Group to change the zoning for about .74 acres on the north side of East University Dr—approximately 240 feet west of North Bell Avenue in Denton. The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to City Council for final action under the Denton 2040 Comprehensive Plan.  City of Denton
