- ➤ Frisco police arrested 28-year-old Ryan Jackson—accused of fatally stabbing his mother, Marie Placide-Jackson, with multiple wounds inside her Valencia Drive home after a 911 call around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday—and the investigation remains active. CBS Texas
- ➤ A former teacher from Donald Elementary, Andrew James McGann, was arrested on Wednesday in Arkansas and charged with capital murder for fatally stabbing a couple who were hiking with their two daughters at Devil’s Den State Park (he is held without bond). NBC 5

- ➤ Texas stores will offer tax-free purchases during the annual Tax-Free Weekend, which runs from Friday, Aug. 8 through midnight Sunday, Aug. 10. - ➤ Denton native Matthew Garcia, a jazz saxophonist and Denton High School graduate, has been accepted to the Juilliard School's Master of Music in Jazz Performance program in fall and will start his studies then. He began playing saxophone at age 11, built his career at NYU and on international tours, and is back in Texas this summer performing, teaching, and giving back to his community — a journey driven by passion and hard work. - ➤ Professor Timothy Jackson settled for $725,000 with UNT after a lawsuit over his writings that critics described as racist—a dispute that raised questions about free speech during the period following George Floyd’s murder. - ➤ Braswell High senior Dustin Sharp filed an online petition asking Denton ISD to fire football coach and athletic director Kent Laster for using harsh tactics that hurt players and caused emotional distress.
