COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Heart of the City Lewisville earned the Nonprofit of the Year honor at the 19th annual Unity Luncheon on July 29th in Lewisville, an event hosted by local chambers and the Highland Village Business Association. Founded in 2019 by Pastor Robert Veal, the organization now helps over 600 families a week with a food pantry, free clothing and counseling — a milestone recognized by local leaders including U.S. Representative Brandon Gill.  Cross Timbers Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 3-alarm fire broke out Thursday morning at the TWU Health Science Center on Administration Drive in Denton — firefighters treated several colleagues for heat exhaustion and two were sent to local hospitals as crews from nearby departments helped contain the blaze.  NBC 5
  • Flower Mound resident Mark Glover has led local search efforts since the July 4 flood, which claimed 137 lives, in his quest to find his missing friend Jeff Ramsey + he says community members hope that the memorial service for the Ramsey family at First Baptist Church of Lewisville on Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m. will bring closure.  Cross Timbers Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texas’ tax-free weekend for clothing, shoes, and school supplies begins today and runs until August 10—shoppers must check that shipping fees do not push any item’s cost above the $100 limit.  NBC 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of North Texas notified Texas Dream Act students that they must confirm their status today to keep paying in-state tuition—students who do not will face higher out-of-state rates. The change follows a June Department of Justice ruling that no longer allows in-state tuition for those without legal status.  KERA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Denton confirmed West Nile virus in mosquito pools collected at Denia Park and South Lakes Park and will move to risk level 4 to boost surveillance—residents are advised to remove standing water and use repellent to reduce their risk.  City of Denton

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cooper Lutkenhaus, a 16-year-old high school junior from Justin, Texas, broke the world record for the fastest 800-meter race by running 1:42.27 at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Oregon on August 7 — he will represent Team USA at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo starting Sept. 13.  CBS Texas
