COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cross Timbers Water Supply Corporation is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and started in 1964 as Bartonville Water Supply, later serving 139 customers and now 2,919 members through five deep wells & 94 miles of pipe. The utility announced plans to add 50 new members and build a new well near Copper Canyon and Orchid Hill Roads by year-end.  Cross Timbers Gazette
  • Registration is open for Denton's second annual Scary Chairy Orchard, a community art project inviting local artists and makers to design original Halloween chairs for display at City Hall Courtyard. Participants must register by Sept. 19 and drop off their chairs on Sept. 25th, 26th, or 27th & meet the project guidelines.  City of Denton

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, two firefighters were hospitalized for heat exhaustion after responding to a fire at TWU Health Sciences Center under construction on Administration Drive, where over two dozen emergency vehicles helped control the blaze, evacuate construction workers, and begin investigating the cause.  KERA

CRIME NEWS

  • Car burglars roamed upscale neighborhoods in Collin and Denton Counties Tuesday morning when Courtney May’s white 2022 Nissan Sentra was stolen from her Frisco driveway—police say the car was later used in break-ins in The Colony and Plano—and investigators are working with multiple agencies to link the crimes.  NBC 5

  • Pauline Beery Mack worked at TWU and NASA and is remembered as one of Denton’s hidden figures—she made key contributions in science and education even though her story was long overlooked.  Denton Record-Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 2025 tax-free weekend started Friday, Aug. 8 and runs through midnight Sunday—shoppers in Denton can buy school supplies, backpacks and approved clothing without having to pay sales tax if items meet state guidelines.  KERA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 2, the university sent a notice to students flagged for nonresident status following the Texas Dream Act reversal that had extended in-state tuition benefits, and they had until August 8 to submit documents proving citizenship. Students who did not provide the required proof had their tuition reclassified to nonresident rates—an action that raised concerns among faculty and staff—adding to the uncertainty over the process.  North Texas Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Texas transit leaders sent a letter on August 8 to congressional representatives urging them to remove a funding ban on the Dallas to Houston high-speed rail project—while some local officials, including Dallas City Council member Cara Mendelsohn, remain skeptical after a local congressman declared the project dead. They say lifting the ban could support travel improvements as Texas’ population grows.  KERA
