- ➤ Hilarity Theater Improv invites Denton residents to its Back to School Improv Show at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30 at the NCTC Black Box Theatre, where the family-friendly event will feature a mix of short-form games and long-form scenes. Founded by theatre professor and comedian Nick Cutelli, the group aims to create an inclusive space—welcoming students, families and community members to enjoy live, unscripted comedy. - ➤ Registration is now open for the second-annual Scary Chairy Orchard—a key Halloween art event held as part of Denton's 31 Days of Denton. - ➤ A new Texas law bans personal devices in public schools from first bell to last—only medical or emergency needs allow an exception. Denton ISD and other North Texas districts must update their written policies by September 18 as they work to remove classroom distractions. NBC 5

- ➤ The city report said weather delays pushed Riney Road’s reopening to Aug. 20 with temporary sidewalks in place so students can safely reach Reeves Elementary, and Mayor Hudspeth earned an award for his work on federal energy policy — a recognition that shows his efforts — while the pet spotlight featured McDonald, a shepherd mix ready for adoption. The update also warned that two mosquito traps found West Nile virus and that street work in Neighborhoods 2 and 6 will resume with a new all-way stop at North Lakes Rec Center — a measure to boost safety — as projects continue amid weather delays. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Denton officials confirmed West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected at Denia Park and South Lakes Park and raised the risk level to 4; although no human cases have been reported, enhanced mosquito surveillance and a limited distribution of mosquito control briquettes are underway. - ➤ Applications to volunteer for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North Texas are now open, and organizers need over 6,000 volunteers to help run the nine matches. - ➤ Ana Moss, a 50-year-old legally blind woman from North Texas, became a finalist for the U.S. national women’s blind cricket team during practice at Trimble Tech High School on August 11 — she overcame challenges from a kidney cancer diagnosis and rapid vision loss.
