Good morning, Denton. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 21st of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new permanent Boys & Girls Club will soon open at 195 W. Corporate Drive in Lewisville — a former fire station — and it will offer low-cost after school and summer programs to Denton County children. It is managed by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County with a $3 million donation from Denton County using remaining American Rescue Plan funds.  Cross Timbers Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, nearly 60 firefighters fought a fierce blaze that destroyed three homes in Denton County’s unincorporated Rocky Point area as they used tankers to haul water from nearby locations—neighbors said the high temperatures forced short work periods and one person suffered minor injuries.  NBC 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Auditor's Office released a new report on Streets—drainage maintenance showing that asset conditions are monitored but planning details and work order documentation are weak, and funding may be too low to meet service needs.  City of Denton
  • The Denton City Council is discussing next year’s budget to cover a $14 million shortfall and rising service costs—this may force increases in water, sewer and recreation fees starting Oct. 1. A public hearing is set for Sept. 9 while final decisions on property taxes and fee adjustments will be considered on Sept. 16.  KERA
  • Governor Greg Abbott signed SB840 and SB15 to help make housing more affordable but these new rules affect only cities with over 150,000 people — leaving Flower Mound and other small towns unchanged — after local leaders testified against them. The bills aim to ease zoning rules for apartments and mixed-use areas while keeping small communities like Flower Mound unaffected.  Cross Timbers Gazette
