  • Based in Dallas, Computers for the Blind refurbishes donated computers by installing software like JAWS—this nonprofit has shipped nearly 22,000 devices that let visually impaired people send emails and browse online with more ease.  CBS Texas

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Blue Bell recalled half-gallon containers of Moo-llennium Crunch ice cream that were mislabeled as Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough—posing a risk for nut-allergic consumers—in 16 states including Texas, and the company advises customers to return the products for a full refund.  NBC 5

CRIME NEWS

  • A Ryan High student was injured in a classroom stabbing and another student was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Friday morning—authorities took the arrested minor to the Juvenile Detention Center while some parents expressed frustration with Denton ISD's vague communication.  KERA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Denton ISD will continue feeding all eligible students free and reduced-cost meals despite a 20% federal SNAP cut that will last until 2034—partnerships with local food banks support a $25 million child nutrition budget amid rising student need. The district works with campuses and community groups to ensure meals are served each school day.  KERA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An audit of Denton’s streets and drainage divisions found major issues with funding and management—as routine inspections were lacking and records were incomplete—leading to unfair fee practices and the risk of future costly repairs. City Manager Sara Hensley said officials will work on 25 recommendations to improve maintenance tracking and fee transparency.  KERA
  • Northlake Town Council voted by a count of 4 to 2 on Thursday to start a pilot program that will mail $25 gift cards from a portion of sales tax funds to nearly 6,000 households to help local businesses along Highway 114 affected by construction. Residents will receive the vouchers in mid-September and businesses will be reimbursed $25 per redeemed card—if the program succeeds, council members hope to expand it.  Cross Timbers Gazette

  • Cooper Lutkenhaus, a 16-year-old track star at Northwest High in Justin, turned pro by signing with Nike Monday — after breaking the under-18 record in the 800-meter race at nationals.
