  • Today, many major retailers, supermarkets and drugstores in Denton will operate with regular or adjusted hours while stores like Costco will be closed and others such as Hobby Lobby, Office Depot and Sam’s Club have reduced hours—postal services and banks are also closed. CRIME NEWS

  • Denton residents are warned by the City that phone scam calls falsely claiming missed jury duty may demand fines using gift cards or cash app payments — these calls use real names and numbers to seem real — and residents should check their status with official sources.  Voice of Denton

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Yellow Rose Project is a photography exhibit and upcoming book debut celebrating women's suffrage created by Meg Griffiths and Frances Jakubek; the project will hold a book launch at 3:30 p.m., an artist panel at 5 p.m., and a closing reception at 6 p.m. on September 4 at TWU’s Fine Arts Building — its images will be on display until September 5 and the book is set for publication on September 28.  Voice of Denton

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNT welcomed students today as classes began for the Fall semester and the campus buzzed with energy—freshmen and returning students filled classrooms and common areas. President Keller, marking his first year, will announce a new five-year plan on November 5 while Week of Welcome events help students adjust to university life.  Voice of Denton

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City Council report noted that the Denton Fire Department earned a three-year accreditation with a perfect score—one of only four in Texas, the monthly financial report was released, and public meetings on airport rule changes and a master plan workshop are scheduled for September 16 at 3 p.m., September 18 at 5 p.m., and September 24 at 5 p.m. The report also covers park upgrades that began August 28 at Carl Young Park, a job fair on September 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ongoing remediation at Wind River Estates retention pond after a sewer release, progress in transportation projects, DTV video campaigns, and the Mayor’s Pet Spotlight featuring Macy, a ready-for-adoption Pit Bull mix.  Voice of Denton
  • The Denton Fire Department earned a three-year accreditation with a perfect score from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services on Aug. 26—confirming its high standards and placing it among only 34 departments in North America.  Voice of Denton

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cowboys signed cornerback DaRon Bland to a 4-year, $92 million contract extension with $50 million guaranteed — days after trading Micah Parsons. The team will kick off the regular season on Sept. 4 when they visit the Philadelphia Eagles, keeping Bland as a key part of their defense.  NBC 5
