GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas lawmakers replaced the STAAR test with three shorter tests that will begin in 2027-28 yet did not pass extra property tax relief during a special session that ended Wednesday—other bills approved camp safety and flood response funding. CBS Texas
- ➤ Denton city officials including Mayor Hudspeth, City Manager Hensley and Police Chief Robledo met with ICE last week to discuss local immigration enforcement under the 287(g) program—no agreement was reached and no further action is planned. KERA
- ➤ The Denton Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 215 E McKinney St to consider changing 34.5 acres from Rural Areas Future Land Use to Light Industrial and 22.5 acres from Low Residential Future Land Use to Community Mixed Use. The recommendation will go to City Council for final action — giving residents a chance to share their views before any changes are made. City of Denton
- ➤ Denton filed a plea after resident Adam Horwitz submitted a petition against the community shelter Our Daily Bread—he said that the shelter’s top bunk assignments and lack of needed accommodations caused him harm.
