  • Denton business Soma Massage Therapy, which has served the community for 15 years, is expanding by offering franchise opportunities to wellness-focused owners—owner Amber Briggle said the model will allow others to bring their healing touch to new areas.  KERA

FINANCE NEWS

  • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced a quarter-point rate cut on Wednesday, September 17th—he said the decision positions policy to respond quickly to economic changes. Local financial advisors expect the move to lower interest on credit cards and mortgages as borrowers seek better loan options.  NBC 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denton residents will see higher water and wastewater bills, increased property taxes and extra fees after City Council unanimously approved a $2.5 billion budget—designed to fund various city services.  Denton Record-Chronicle
  • Denton County launched a new podcast—Denton County Conversations—to help residents understand county government after work by Director of Community Relations Dawn Cobb and Judge Andy Eads. Each episode will feature local voices discussing topics like emergency management and transportation.  Cross Timbers Gazette
  • The Denton Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on October 8 at 6:30 p.m.—the meeting will review a request by Veronica Yeary for Benjamin & Dilicia Canales to rezone 0.93 acres from Residential 4 and 5.75 acres from Rural Residential to Mixed-Use Neighborhood. The commission’s recommendation will be sent to City Council for final action according to the Denton 2040 Comprehensive Plan.  City of Denton
  • The City of Denton is asking residents to review draft amendments for HOME and HOME-ARP funds and to share feedback from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 so that housing support programs are adjusted; the plan details changes that will shift about $693K in HOME funds and $502K in HOME-ARP funds toward rental assistance and case management services—aiming to better serve those at risk of homelessness.  City of Denton
  • Today, Denton County Commissioners Court approved the purchase of the Ponder Volunteer Fire Station as the first step toward expanding fire and EMS services in unincorporated areas—24/7 staffing will begin this fall and an ambulance will be added to cover the Emergency Response Zone. The move is part of the Fire and EMS Master Plan adopted in June 2024.  Cross Timbers Gazette
