- ➤ Salad and Go will close 41 stores across Texas and Oklahoma, including all in Houston, Austin and San Antonio—while keeping its Dallas-Fort Worth locations open. CBS Texas
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A survey found North Texas nonprofits lost $127M in funding in the first half of the year—$71.6M of which was federal—forcing many organizations to cut staff and services amid economic uncertainty. Many groups are planning adjustments for North Texas Giving Day to try to offset the losses. KERA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Denton City Council approved a $2.55 billion budget Tuesday night that will increase water rates, wastewater bills, property taxes and fees for local residents—raising the property tax rate to 59.542 cents per $100 and adding about $78 for a home valued at $386,698. The fiscal year 2025-26 budget begins Oct. 1 and projects further utility rate hikes through fiscal year 2029-30. KERA
- ➤ During a special work session, the Denton City Council directed staff to complete overdue audits and add financial planning, vehicle management and climate preparedness to the city's 2025—26 internal audit plan. City Auditor Madison Denton said her office faces a backlog and the revised plan will return to council later this fall for approval. North Texas Daily
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ North Texas health care and community leaders warn that if the enhanced premium tax credits expire by year end, nearly 4 million Texans may face higher insurance costs and more expensive emergency room care + rural hospitals could lose jobs as the strain on uncompensated care grows. They urge residents to contact lawmakers to help extend the credit and prevent further economic impacts. KERA
- ➤ Flea-borne typhus has steadily increased over the last five years with cases rising from 580 in 2022 to 847 in 2024—this disease spreads when infected fleas bite people and cause fever, headache, nausea, body aches and a rash that starts on the torso before moving to the arms and legs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises keeping pets free of fleas, using insect repellent and practicing proper hygiene to slow the spread. NBC 5
- ➤ Make-A-Wish North Texas opened its new headquarters yesterday to give kids with critical illnesses a place to relax and enjoy surprises—like a hidden door and toy room.
