North Texas animal shelter The Colony Animal Care Services saw an early surge in pet surrender calls on Nov.

21 as many owners planned travel for Thanksgiving, with director Mark Cooper noting that some use the holiday to avoid boarding fees — a similar trend is expected the week of Christmas.

A local family said Denton Animal Services released cats unsafely after a trap-neuter-return program ran for nearly two years without formal guidelines before the cats were adopted in late September.
