Good morning, Denton. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 31st of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new law in Texas will cut local health department fees and let a state food manager certificate work statewide starting September 1st, which is expected to save restaurants money and reduce paperwork. Restaurant owners say the changes will remove duplicate fees—such as for alcohol permits—and help small businesses stay afloat.  NBC 5
  • H-E-B purchased additional land in Denton County for a possible new store—officials said the site may be developed once planning is complete.  Denton Record-Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposal to ban hemp-derived THC products stalled in the House — after passing the Senate earlier this month — and it is unlikely to move forward during this special session.  Cross Timbers Gazette
  • Denton officials proposed fee increases to cover rising personnel costs such as for police and fire—along with higher operating expenses like water and stormwater charges—at the Aug. 19 council meeting. The proposed changes will be open for public comment at the Sept. 9 hearing before the council votes.  North Texas Daily
